Winter pool at work

The pond digger did a lot of work at night this week and in between NFL football plays. He created a drip system for the winter pool, a giant rain bar, extra lights in the garage and some time this week a heavy plastic divider wall will go up to keep the aquarium smell contained. It’s a little sad to see the outdoor ponds being cleaned up for the winter but I do love seeing the koi up close. They are re-learning that swimming towards someone standing next to the pool might result in some food. Just like outdoors, the first one gobbling food down is T2. I don’t think all of the koi are getting something to eat but eventually they all will.

We’re running a drip system this year. The water that gets dripped in is actually warm. If this works well enough we are hoping that we won’t have to do water changes – wouldn’t that be great!
pulls water from the pool and into the bead filter…The koi also like to play at the entrance of the skimmer. We had to put a little rack in front of it to keep them from sticking their heads into the skimmer.
Our filtration system is a bead filter which is pretty quiet.
The winter pool has some insulation pieces floating on it to keep the water a littler warmer, to give the koi something to swim under and it keeps the water evaporation down (and the smell).
swimming around as a pack…
I think the koi like looking out of the side window as much as I like looking into the pool 🙂
