More koi in the winter pool

Yesterday we had a few snowflakes in Minnesota. Nothing that stuck but a reminder that it’s going to be very cold soon. We decided to bring in some of the larger koi from the upper pond. We tried to measure the koi using a tape measure so these are close but not exact numbers. The koi seem pretty happy in their winter home. We definitely need some sort of exhaust system in our garage because it’s already starting to smell like an aquarium 🙁 We still have a few small koi in the upper pond that we’ll have to get out this weekend.

In the winter pool, the shiro utsuris have become very shy and quickly swim away when they see anyone by the side of the pool. I’m hoping that the addition of the rest of the koi will stamp out this behavior. The koi spend their first few hours just swimming around looking for a way to escape. Some of them stop and look up at the edges; some of them nose around the entrance to the skimmer. I have placed a little piece of plastic grating so that we don’t have another casualty.
