Spring Cleanup has started

Spring looks like it’s here. A few cold snaps still in the forecast but the snow has melted and the ground is not totally frozen. While we love to go cross country skiing, warmer temps switch our focus. It’s exciting to start cleaning up the outdoor ponds.

Check out the photos of work that has started this weekend.

Last weekend (March 5/6) we started spring cleaning the upper pond. Here's the pond digger throwing out the last of the ice after draining the pond.

Cleaning the muck in the pond is pretty stinky work. Many koi keepers never do this but we needed to adjust the bottom drains and we think it keeps the string algae down. Plus it's a good way to check the liner for integrity.

Typical deer damage - I have a number of plants that the deer nibbled over winter. I cover my young trees with burlap but may have to do the azaleas as well this fall. 😠

Clean upper pond, raised bottom drains, waiting for the pipe work to be redone and hooked up. Hoping to put koi in here by the end of April.

This will be the new moving bed filter. Since we are building a deck over the equipment pit, we wanted something with a little lower profile. Polytank has something for every purpose.

The pond digger said that a 12" saw was necessary to make cleaner cuts on the 4" pipe.... New toy.

He's redoing the 4" piping for a neater look and ease of access - I guess the new saw works πŸ˜‰
