We took a little break today to host the local koi club meeting. The only work the pond digger did today was to install a UV filter on the upper pond. He’s been doing a great job installing everything neatly in the equipment pits. He’s had some difficulty with the new structure – being quite tall, he’s left some skin on the wood roof supports. All of the koi are outside now and they are much hungrier swimming around all day. I have another large Shiro Utsuri named “Super” from another koi club member. Super was a little stressed and his skin looked a little pinker . After a night in the pond, his white color is coming back. The colorful koi have plenty of space and we’ve decided they need some friends. We purchased a new Kohaku and two Asagis. They are small now but I’m hoping they will grow up to be competitive. I also ended up with two Sanke tosai from the growout program our company sponsors.

UMKC meetings are a nice way to see other member ponds. It’s always interesting to see how other people build their ponds. Meetings are a good way to get ideas and trade suggestions on how to keep koi better. Some people are more interested in koi and others like to get geeky about equipment.

Last year the pond digger’s company offered to sponsor a growout program for the club. This year we sourced some Sanke koi through Koi Acres. Devin and Mikki Swanson agreed to sell us high quality koi at significantly below retail. The koi are then donated to the club and this year through a silent auction, ten club members got some great deals. They will be bringing the koi to the UMKC Koi Show in August to compete in their own category and are eligible for show wide size and variety awards.

Long day but nice to spend time with koi people. Too busy to take a photo of my new koi but I’ll get to it this week.
