We’ve had some pretty cold temperatures this December before Christmas. The weekend before Christmas our temperatures were down to 25 below zero. The koi have been doing well in their indoor pool, water temperature around 50. They are not eating though. I throw in a few pieces of food and one or two might eat a piece but I think feeding time is over for winter. The pond digger has been adding a few things to the pool. We have a second grow light and they are set on some timers. Not really sure how it will benefit the koi but they do seem more active this year.

We also changed the water circulation pattern which keeps most of the koi towards the front edge of the garage rather than the door. Then we installed the surveillance system so we can take a look at our koi throughout the day. The system can do little recordings and also function under low lights.

So I wrote that all of the koi are doing well but we have two koi that we eliminated from our little pool. They were purchased as 6-7″ tosai and they have been losing their red coloring. Unlike my shiro utsuris where the black coloring (sumi) may come and go during development, the red coloring on koi should not disappear. Benny has red coloring that has faded into orange tones and Pablo has lost large areas of red. Another reason not to waste your money on tosai 😉

As 2016 ends, I’m feeling good that this year our winter pool has not had health issues. Happy New Year!🎏
