Spring is here according to the calendar but it’s been delayed a few weeks in Little Siberia (Minnesota). Today we actually got some koi and pond work done. Kevin Pham shipped some tosai to me and they all arrived in great shape. I still have two Kase showas swimming around in San Jose and they’ll probably fly out here in two weeks.

Now the pond builder has been so antsy about getting the outdoor ponds running so we can move the koi back out. Storm Xantos dumped about 15 inches over the weekend and he announced that our pond was most likely not opening until May 15th at the earliest. This is still true but sunshine today and slightly warmer temperatures always gets him outdoors doing something to hasten his ability to work on equipment.
We threw a submersible pump into the pond and recirculated water on to the ice sheet to help break it up. The sledge hammer came in pretty handy as well. I’m predicting that someone will need some Aleve tonight.
Sunday – after storm Xantos drops 15 inches in the Twin Cities regionTuesday – we decide to try a submersible pumpThursday morning – we’ve been making some progress. Chunks have been sledgehammered down and we have shoveled the snow away from the pond edges.pond builder and his trusty sledge hammerThursday, after picking up the koi, he’s back in the pond throwing out chunks of ice.back breaking workthe ice covering of the pond is down…The lower pond on Thursday morning…The lower pond on Thursday afternoon – ready for some work a little pressure washing and then to hook up all the filtration back up!
