Filtration

Last night, we had another koi kichi family over for dinner. Matt Invented Kenzen koi food and has a great deal of knowledge about ponds, water quality and koi. Matt has suggested we build a vault for our equipment since our pond is naturally on top of a hill in the back yard. (think hobbit hole for pumps, skimmers and whatever….). He also thought our pond was perfectly shaped for a Quonset hut looking greenhouse structure for the winter. The koi could then hang out in 60 degree weather while the rest of Minnesota was at sub zero temperatures. Good ideas, not sure if I want to pursue them. I’m sure Tony does.

Since the water clarity was bugging Tony, tonight he’s trying an experiment. He went to the local Target and purchased all the bath sponges he could find (he did leave two) and some laundry bags to make a filter media bag. He put them in our skimmer boxes to see how much particulate might end up out of the water and in the sponges over 24 hours.
