I’m predicting that the large koi might be able to move into the large pond in three weeks – but that’s a big maybe. The best plans will often get derailed by weather, work and other things that happen. This weekend I finished another large gardening project. Gardening is important to me because I happen…

The pond builder is too tired to watch fireworks
The pond builder is exhausted. This weekend he toiled under the hot sun around the lower pond. I can hear the local fireworks outside, but the pond builder is falling asleep. You might be wondering why we’re working outside all the time but it really is our hobby. We enjoy puttering around the yard and…
What a difference 9 days can make…Mr. Pond Builder is on a roll
The lower pond build site is not the most attractive part of the yard but I’m excited to report that the lower pond is almost ready to be home for the koi that are still in the garage. We’re thinking they should be out here before the weekend. Summer has turned on over night so…
Weather forecasts a busy weekend ahead
Great weather means we’re outside all weekend. We got a head start on our weekend by heading up to Koi Acres in Scandia, MN to pick up my new Dainichi Showa tosai. He/She (hopefully she) is named Costello. Showa koi like Abbot and Costello take about five years to develop. The Showa and Shiro Utsuri…
Thanksgiving weekend = pond work
Having a few days off means the pond digger is hard at work doing stuff. He put a smaller pump on the indoor pool filtration system and we actually have clearer water. Sometimes changing the water too fast never gave the floating debris a chance to settle. He also added in a no niche skimmer…
Never a dull moment around the koi pond
All summer the pond digger has been sighing and commenting that he’ll have nothing to do next summer. Basically the pond digger is an over grown kid who wants to be outside as much as possible and play with power tools during the good weather months. Since I said we could not have a third…
Five years…
Have I already written how much I love having little waterfalls, ponds and koi in my backyard? Who would have thought that all this would result from a little comment the pond digger made five years ago, “How about a water feature in the backyard?” Backyard Pond, version 1, Summer 2010 Backyard Ponds, Summer 2015
Working on a koi pond is kind of messy
Two weeks since I last posted; the pond digger says I’m slacking off. I actually do have a life outside of koi keeping that keeps me pretty busy. We have a kitchen renovation that started seven weeks ago and there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Of course my house is dusty, things…
Koi in the Upper Pond :-)
The pond digger is exhausted – too tired to even watch Game of Thrones. A lot of things were put together and the moving bed filter was created. It’s a little tight in the equipment hole but he made it all work. We’ve been filling the pond for about two days now…and of course patience…
pond progress
The pond digger does not want to be the ‘pond filter cleaner’ this summer so the RDF seems to be a good, albeit expensive solution. He’s made some good progress the last two weeks. Check out the “2015 – tweaking the ponds” tab on this website to see the latest work.
I’m married to the best pond digger…
It’s really amazing to see all the work pond digger can do in a weekend. We still have a number of things to do for the winter pond but it’s nice to have the waterfall running and seeing the pond filled. The koi will move into this pond in November so we have a fair…
Thankfully we don’t live in a drought area
The pond digger has been working hard on the lower/winter pond. He’s made great progress and in fact the lower pond is filled and the waterfall is running. I just didn’t want to put up a photo until the dust in the water has cleared a bit and we get some of the pond site…
